a one-day seminar
Conducted by Archdeacon Shant Kazanjian, Director of Christian Education (Eastern Prelacy)
Registration required by March 15, 2019For information and registration, please contact the church office at
______________________________________________________The Eucharist (Soorp Badarak) has been the central act of worship for all Christian churches since the inception of Christianity. What is Badarak all about? Why do we do what we do? How can we participate more actively in the Badarak and get more out of it? This seminar will address these issues and more. The participants will:
– Get a solid biblical background for understanding worship and Eucharistic celebration, its basic elements, content, vocabulary, images and symbolic language.
– See clearly the basic structure of the service.
– Receive step-by-step guidelines of the drama of the Soorp Badarak, with commentary on prayers and hymns and liturgical movements and symbols, using short Badarak video clips, with a detailed outline of the service, cross-referenced to the Prelacy’s Soorp Badarak book.
Sponsored by the Prelacy’s Armenian Religious Education Council (AREC) and St. Illuminator’s Cathedral

The calendar of upcoming events is at:

As to this week’s events, here it is as quick reference, from March 4th till March 18, 2019 – there might be other events added, so it’s best to consult the above calendar link.

This quote is from the

Lent Begins Monday, March 4
Lent is the 40-day period before Easter when every Christian is asked to reflect upon their lives in preparation for the Resurrection of our Lord. The three main pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During these weeks of reflection, the Holy Altar will be closed and draped with a curtain. Holy Communion will not be distributed. The faithful are asked to participate in Friday Lenten vigils and supper when possible and to come to Morning Services on Sunday before Badarak. In these 40 days of Lent we should all strive to become better Christians by praying more, fasting and doing good deeds towards those in need. At the end of the Lenten journey we will be better prepared to receive the resurrected Lord.Kotz Badarak
During the Lenten season the Holy Altar is draped with a curtain – symbolizing Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden – and Holy Communion is not offered to the congregation. Mahs continues to be distributed to the faithful. If an individual would like to receive Holy Communion during Lent, please contact Fr. Abraham at 718-225-0235 to discuss.

Book event: “The Missing Pages”
Thursday, February 287:00 – 8:30pm
Description:  FB event page (please check the official page for inquiries and any changes) ==>
In 2010, the world’s wealthiest art institution, the J. Paul Getty Museum, found itself confronted by a century-old genocide. The Armenian Church was suing for the return of eight pages from the Zeytun Gospels, a manuscript illuminated by the greatest medieval Armenian artist, Toros Roslin. Protected for centuries in a remote church, the holy manuscript had followed the waves of displaced people exterminated during the Armenian genocide. Passed from hand to hand, caught in the confusion and brutality of the First World War, it was cleaved in two. Decades later, the manuscript found its way to the Republic of Armenia, while its missing eight pages came to the Getty.
Heghnar Zeitlian Watenpaugh follows in the manuscript’s footsteps through seven centuries, from medieval Armenia to the killing fields of 1915 Anatolia, the refugee camps of Aleppo, Ellis Island, and Soviet Armenia, and ultimately to a Los Angeles courtroom.
Reconstructing the path of the pages, Watenpaugh uncovers the rich tapestry of an extraordinary artwork and the people touched by it. At once a story of genocide and survival, of unimaginable loss and resilience, The Missing Pages captures the human costs of war and persuasively makes the case for a human right to art.
About the author
Heghnar Zeitlian Watenpaugh is Professor of Art History at the University of California, Davis. She is the award-winning author of The Image of an Ottoman City: Architecture in Aleppo (2004). Her writing has also appeared in the Huffington Post and the Los Angeles Times.
