Upcoming events in greater NY – March 4-10, 2019

The calendar of upcoming events is at: https://sites.google.com/view/hye-info/armenian-events-calendars

As to this week’s events, here it is as quick reference, from March 4th till March 18, 2019 – there might be other events added, so it’s best to consult the above calendar link.

This quote is from the

Lent Begins Monday, March 4
Lent is the 40-day period before Easter when every Christian is asked to reflect upon their lives in preparation for the Resurrection of our Lord. The three main pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During these weeks of reflection, the Holy Altar will be closed and draped with a curtain. Holy Communion will not be distributed. The faithful are asked to participate in Friday Lenten vigils and supper when possible and to come to Morning Services on Sunday before Badarak. In these 40 days of Lent we should all strive to become better Christians by praying more, fasting and doing good deeds towards those in need. At the end of the Lenten journey we will be better prepared to receive the resurrected Lord.Kotz Badarak
During the Lenten season the Holy Altar is draped with a curtain – symbolizing Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden – and Holy Communion is not offered to the congregation. Mahs continues to be distributed to the faithful. If an individual would like to receive Holy Communion during Lent, please contact Fr. Abraham at 718-225-0235 to discuss.

In 2010, the world’s wealthiest art institution, the J. Paul Getty Museum, found itself confronted by a century-old genocide. The Armenian Church was suing for the return of eight pages from the Zeytun Gospels, a manuscript illuminated by the greatest medieval Armenian artist, Toros Roslin. Protected for centuries in a remote church, the holy manuscript had followed the waves of displaced people exterminated during the Armenian genocide. Passed from hand to hand, caught in the confusion and brutality of the First World War, it was cleaved in two. Decades later, the manuscript found its way to the Republic of Armenia, while its missing eight pages came to the Getty.
Heghnar Zeitlian Watenpaugh follows in the manuscript’s footsteps through seven centuries, from medieval Armenia to the killing fields of 1915 Anatolia, the refugee camps of Aleppo, Ellis Island, and Soviet Armenia, and ultimately to a Los Angeles courtroom.
Reconstructing the path of the pages, Watenpaugh uncovers the rich tapestry of an extraordinary artwork and the people touched by it. At once a story of genocide and survival, of unimaginable loss and resilience, The Missing Pages captures the human costs of war and persuasively makes the case for a human right to art.
About the author
Heghnar Zeitlian Watenpaugh is Professor of Art History at the University of California, Davis. She is the award-winning author of The Image of an Ottoman City: Architecture in Aleppo (2004). Her writing has also appeared in the Huffington Post and the Los Angeles Times.

Amazon’s Departure Leaves Developers and Brokers Picking Up the Pieces — Commercial Observer

Like shell-shocked natives of a war zone after the white flags have gone up, New York City real estate players are emerging in the wake of Amazon’s abrupt headquarters cancellation to survey the damage. As far as anyone knew, on February 13, the Seattle-based e-commerce titan was locked into plans it first announced in November…

Schedule for Spring Enrichment Evenings: Series on Migration

I plan on attending most of these events at Zohrab Center. They are very informative and well planned events.

The Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center

The Zohrab Information Center is pleased to announce the full schedule of its Winter/Spring 2019 Enrichment Evening Series on Migration. The series explores the contemporary and highly relevant topic of migration through the lens of Armenian and Armenian Christian history and current events. By looking at this timely topic through an Armenian lens, the Zohrab Information Center invites all its participants to consider a fraught topic in all its complexity. The theme of migration encompasses and exceeds the question of the Armenian Genocide, with the Genocide the focus of several of the enrichment evenings. Relics trades, manuscript movement and digitization, migration within the Ottoman Empire, and humanitarian responses to migration crises are some of the additional ways the Zohrab Information Center will explore the topic of migration. We encourage you to join us throughout the Winter and Spring Series on Migration!

The full schedule is posted below.

Armenian events in Greater New York

For the longest time, I had tried to add the Armenian events links, which get posted at the Facebook group on an easily accessible calendar. Eventually I managed few months ago to accomplish this personal project. It’s to serve the Greater New York Armenian community.

Not everyone is on Facebook, hence a calendar off Facebook was very welcome addition.

On Facebook, at New York Armenians group, when you click on the “events” link on the left margin, you may access the upcoming events in the community.

Here is the events calendar on google.

Topic: Starstuff To Supernovae · Hosted by AESA Northeastern Section

Please join the AESA Northeastern section and attend this very interesting Astrophysics lecture and computer simulation movie by David Vartanyan.

Abstract:
The question of our origins is as much a scientific question as a philosophical one: where did we come from? Biologically, at least, we now believe the majority of atoms in our body originally come from core-collapse supernovae – the explosive deaths of massive stars, more than 10 the times the size of our sun. Yet, for over half century, our theories and models have been unable to explain how exactly these stars explode. Using the latest supercomputers and an improved understanding of atomic physics, we now present a state-of-the-art simulation of the successful, vigorous explosion of a core-collapse supernova. Our work marks recent progress within the astrophysics community to understanding the deaths of these massive stars and the birth of elements seeding the universe around us.

About the speaker:
David Vartanyan’s parents immigrated from Armenia to Glendale, CA in 1991, where he was born and grew up. During his teenage years, he was heavily influenced by his father’s stories of Professor Viktor Hambartsumyan (1908-1996), and decided early on to pursue Astrophysics. David received his Bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics from Caltech. While in Califormia he was a member of the St. Mary’s Armenian Church in Glendale, until he moved to Princeton University for his graduate studies. Here, interestingly
enough, he is attending the St. Mary’s Armenian Church in Livingston, NJ. He received his Master’s degree from Princeton and is now in the final year of his PhD program at Princeton.

Light refreshments will be served.
